Our Story: From a Safe Space to a Movement
Oceania Pride was created to meet a simple yet important need: a safe digital home for the LGBTIQ community in Fiji. On October 9, 2009, founder Jasmine Kaur set up this refuge on Facebook, where individuals could find support without fear.
Soon, this private group became more than a community; it turned into a centre for change. Members started sharing their stories and discussing the social issues that impacted their daily lives. It was during these sincere conversations that Jasmine saw a vital truth: these discussions were too significant to remain hidden. They needed a platform and a wider audience.
Motivated by this belief, Jasmine began entering feminist spaces, bringing the community’s stories to ensure queer perspectives were included in larger equality movements. This key step marked our transformation from a private support group to a public advocacy platform.
Since then, Oceania Pride has worked hard to create spaces within feminist movements and civil society organisations at all levels—from local and national to regional and international forums. We act as a platform to highlight the important issues facing our community, making sure the voices of queer people in Fiji and the Pacific are not only heard but also play a crucial role in shaping a more inclusive and fair future for everyone.
